It began with our grandmother
One evening sat around the dinner table, Māma - our grandmother, began to tell us about the years she spent weaving in China. It was a craft she had mastered long before any of us were born, and one none of us had known she carried.
Craft had run through our family for generations, unspoken.
nuãei grew out of that evening, out of a wish to keep her story and craft alive.
The craft that carried us here
That same craft carried our family all the way to England. Her hands, her patience, and the quiet independence it gave her.
My brother James and I began this in her honour. You knew us then as Wicker Wings.
Our mission
A search for the rare
What began with one craft became a search for others, the rare weaves kept alive across Asia, and the women who have mastered them, just as Mama once did.
We wanted to bring their artistry into the light, and to place in your hands a bag unlike any other: the kind a room turns to ask you about.
From nüwa to nuãei
When the two of us wanted to evolve the brand into something greater, we asked Mama for a name. She gave us Nüwa, the Chinese goddess who shaped the world from what the earth gave her, and kept family at its heart.
It was everything we hoped to build, held in a single word. nuãei is for her. And for you.
